Greens!

Hi again! I'm finally getting around to posting these images. I'm back-dating this post to June 5th to reflect when the pictures were taken. The first shows my Brussels sprouts and onions/garlic/shallots (front to back). I read that Brussels sprouts are much better from the garden than from the store - with any luck I'll find out!

I planted three six-packs of lettuce: esmeralda, romaine, and a salad mix. Esmeralda is meant for my lunch sandwiches. Last year my lettuce was predictably bitter by July, so I planted the bolt-resistant Esmeralda this year. The plants between each batch of lettuce are bell peppers - one each of red, orange, and yellow. They'll grow up as the lettuce is harvested.

The seedlings at the upper right are Swiss chard. It was a household hit last year, so I'm going from one plant to six!

Hi everyone! Thanks for checking in! One thing I love about gardening is that every week brings something new, so hopefully I will be able to post relatively frequently.

Here are two overview photos to get you oriented. My plot is located behind our apartment complex and is 17' x 30', or 510 square feet. It is amazingly sunny and has terrific soil. The garden runs from northwest to southeast, and the first photo looks southeast. My plot is surrounded by other plots, but only one is being used much. It is to the left in this photo.

In the far back right you can just make out a bed of straw where I've planted some Hale's Best melons.

The second photo looks northwest, with the benches in the north corner. Working toward the camera, you can see herbs, basil, Swiss chard, lettuce, carrots (just coming up), shallots/garlic/onions, and finally a row of Brussels sprouts. Peas are off to the left, and there are cherry toms and peppers off-camera to the right. The black plastic is where my tomatoes will go - hopefully this week! To the left of the plastic is a bed with broccoli and bush beans.

It's looking a little sparse right now, but that will change quickly as the season progresses!
